Matthew Mercer

Captain Mercer in year 304

Captain Matthew Mercer, later General Mercer, worked in service of the city of Ivers and of King Adrian Greenspear. He was the captain of the city guard for many years, and when Ivers formed an army in 303, he became its general; though he could never get used to that title.

As Captain of the Ivers Guard

As captain of the city guard, Mercer oversaw the training and coordination of the men. He was charged with organizing patrols, interrogating prisoners, leading the occasional expedition to defend the city, doing mounds of paperwork, and dealing with meddlesome adventurers.

As General of the Ivers Army

After the Ivers army was founded in year 303, he became its general. His first mission was to lead his troops up the Whitefrost Mountains against the ancient black dragon Taevarth. The dragon was stopped, but many troops were lost in the process. This forced Mercer to rely upon the might of mercenaries and adventurers for several years, until the full might of the army could be restored.

In year 318, he personally commanded a small squad of soldiers to hunt down and capture the king of thieves, Elric Dynamo. Though the thief was caught, he mysteriously died in prison the same night, and the mortician cremated his body before Mercer could carry out his interrogation. Though the string of thefts came to an end, Mercer harbored doubts about the fate of Dynamo for many years.

Association with The Wiggles

Of the many notable acquaintances Captain Mercer made over the years, perhaps the most troublesome were a band of adventurers known as The Wiggles. Mercer could often be heard complaining about the trouble they had caused him, though when pressed he would describe them as a necessary nuisance. After the Wiggles permanently dissolved in 309, he married one of their previous members, Amy. Together they have a son named Marcus.
